American, 1858–1909

BIOGRAPHY
'William Verplanck Birney trained at the Massachusetts Normal Art School in Boston and at the Königliche Akademie in Munich. He received a medal in Buffalo in 1901 and at St Louis in 1904, and was highly commended at the Munich International Exhibition in the same year. He became a member of the National Academy in 1900, and was a member of the Salmagundi, the Lotos Club and the New York Watercolor Club, among others.' (Benezit, Dictionary of Artists, Paris, 2006).
