Painted in 1912, this work is a study for the artist's Venise, La Piazzetta (oil on canvas, 22 x 29 inches), which was sold at Rossini, Hôtel Drouot, Paris on December 6, 2001, lot 103.

This is one of several Venetian studies made by Lucien Simon during his stay in Venice between April and October of 1912. Simon and his friend Jacques-Emile Blanche, along with René Ménard and Gaston Latouche, had been invited to exhibit at the prestigious Venice Biennale in that year.
