This still life, dedicated to the artist's neighbor and friend A. Benoît, was painted in 1887, the pivotal year in which Émile Schuffenecker introduced him to Paul Gauguin, who would become a lifelong friend and confidante. The Chinese vase depicted in this work appears in several paintings dating from 1896 to 1915.
