James Edward Buttersworth was probably the son and pupil of Thomas Buttersworth, a painter of sea battles. He emigrated to the USA and settled in West Hoboken, New Jersey. He also kept a studio in Brooklyn. From 1850 to 1852 he showed work in the exhibitions of the American Art Union of New York. He specialized in seascapes and painted boats in meticulous detail.
