Emms began his career assisting Frederic, Lord Leighton on his fresco The Ten Virgins in Lyndhurst Parish Church. He went on to become one of the preeminent animal painters of the second half of the nineteenth century, exhibited frequently at the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of British Artists, and is perhaps best known for his portrayals of English Foxhounds and Fox Terriers.
