This majestic panorama was completed after Richards returned home from several years in Europe. Like his friend, Albert Bierstadt, he was impressed by the grandeur of the Alps at a time when geological forces were beginning to be fully understood. The overall impression conveyed by this scene is one of great tranquility, underscored by the artist’s use of nearly pastel tones of blue and pink in the sky and mountains.
