George Richmond was a portrait painter and watercolorist. He studied at the Royal Academy schools where he formed a lifelong friendship with Samuel Palmer. Together with Palmer and Edward Calvert, he was part of the group of Blake’s followers called The Ancients. His early work shows strong Blake influence. Once Blake died he took up painting in miniatures, chalks and oils. He became a leading portrait painter of his day. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, Suffolk Street, and the British Institute.
