HELENA STURTEVANT

American, 1872-1946

BIOGRAPHY
Helena Sturtevant was born in Middletown, Rhode Island in 1872. She studied at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School with Edmund Tarbell and continued her studies at the Colarossi Academy in Paris with Jacques-Emile Blanche and Lucien Simon.

She had a studio on the grounds of her mother’s estate, “Marinden”, on Second Beach Road (now Purgatory Road) in Middletown, Rhode Island. She became known for landscape and marine paintings – especially paintings of the boats in the International Cup Races off Newport. In 1930, an exhibition titled Scenes of the International Race Week in Newport Harbor - Paintings by Helena Sturtevant, was presented at Montross Gallery in New York.

In November 1909, an exhibition of her landscapes and portraits stated: “Miss Sturtevant has a liking for effects of light in nature. Indeed, it is among the best of her qualities. One feels that the artist has a genuine interest in nature. There are two large studies of Newport scenery, looking over the land to the sea which have excellent qualities.”

Sturtevant became a member of the National Association of Women Artists in 1909. She was a member of the Newport Art Association, American Federation of Arts, and the College Art Association. She was also a member of the International Society of Arts and Letters and the American Artists Professional League.

Sturtevant exhibited in the 1902, 1911, and 1943 annual exhibitions of the National Academy of Design. Her works were shown in five annual exhibitions of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts from 1905-1917. She also exhibited in the 1913 Annual Exhibition of Watercolors by American Artists at the Art Institute of Chicago; the 1927 Paris Salon; the 1939-40 Golden Gate International Exposition in San Francisco; in American Art Today at the 1939 New York World’s Fair; the Copley Galleries in Boston and with the Newport Art Association.
