This work depicts the sculpture made from life by Sir William Reid Dick, commissioned by the Royal Academy, for which Churchill sat in Downing Street in 1942. Alfred Cooper assisted the sculptor and made several sketches of Churchill during the sittings, in addition to the present study of the bust of Churchill. Cooper's resulting portrait of Churchill, titled Profile for Victory, was shown at the Royal Academy, also in 1943, and is now in the collection of The Carlton Club, London. It was published as a morale-boosting wartime print which became immensely popular with the general public.
