This is a preparatory study for the artist's painting of the same title exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1883. The subject is based on Jean de la Fontaine's fable La Cigale et la fourmi. A large study in oil depicting the same figure and dating from 1882 was included in a sale at Sotheby's, New York on May 23rd, 1997.
